In gastric banding a silicone band is placed around the stomach just below the entrance to the stomach. The capacity of the stomach is significantly reduced by doing this. The patients therefore have a feeling of fullness after very small meals.
The band is connected to a reservoir via a connecting tube that lies under the skin. It is possible to adjust the band individually via the reservoir. The band is adjusted for the first time about 6 weeks after the surgery.
The gastric banding surgery is performed laparoscopically. It is suitable for all grades of obesity.
In the first year following surgery, the obesity can be reduced by, on average, 50-60%. An important advantage of gastric banding is that the anatomy of the stomach remains unaltered. Should the band need to removed, then the intra abdominal anatomy remains as before.
